In daily life, often is there a conversation beginning with "which star constellation are you?". Scholars thought negatively about the popularity of constellation among the youth. They tend to evaluate the issue from an objective and social problem perspective, overlooking the self-perceptions of the youth themselves. During my grown-up experiences, though I understand the lack of sufficient scientific support of the twelve constellations, I find myself attracted to like it and to believe in it after I have practiced and learned more about it. My question is why are some youth become "fascinated" with constellations? Are there any other reasons that go beyond the common critique of "the dependence" and "semi-erudition” of the youth and followers of star constellation? How do they rationalize and think about and practice in their belief in constellation? The purpose of this paper is to explore the reasons why the youth practice and believe in the constellation pop culture in ordinary life. I dwell on the perspectives of the youth and combine them with the theory of self-cognition and development, especially the emerging adulthood concept. Also, I try to find the reason why there are differences in constellation pop cultures between Taiwan and mainland China. My research questions are about the youth who believe in and practice constellation. First, the process of "self-development" and its relations to believe in constellation in early adulthood. Second, the reasons why people would believe in and use constellations in their own views. And third, what is the response of the youth when asked about the relationships between star constellation, higher education level, and reasoning. This thesis interviewed nine young adults in Taiwan and China.
The paper finds that people use and believe in constellation in different ways: one is finding a sense of security and comfort when facing uncertainties. The other is to use constellations to categorize people into different tendencies and to establish a practical relationship. The first kind of usage is described as believe in Yunshi (the trend of luck) aspect, meaning something that is predetermined and not changeable by voluntary actions. People who believe in Yunshi, tend to be more passive in their ordinary life. The second kind of usage is described as believe in types of personalities. They are more active in trying to make out their daily decisions and encountering in ordinary life. Also, through analyzing two popular constellation celebrities and their shows, the result indicates that Taiwan and mainland China have different trajectories of constellation development. The Chinese celebrity shows promote the belief in types of personalities, while the Taiwan celebrity shows promote the belief in Yunshi.
