The purpose of the research focused on the ways of implementing environmental education(EE) at an urban park, Da-An Forest Park, in Taipei city. Research questions are: (1) what resources can an urban space like Da-An Forest Park and its surroundings provide in terms of EE? (2) what are the possible contents? and (3) how to proceed with EE in Da-An Forest Park.
This exploratory research is predominantly structured by investigations in different areas including relevant studies on the Da-An Forest Park and interviews with users of the park and experts relatively. The study employed observation, interview, documentary analysis, and questionnaire as the data collection techniques. The findings of this study are following:
Firstly, to conduct EE in the Da-An Forest Park, space, nature and manpower are the available resources to park users.
Secondly, there are four aspects which can be taken into account in programming for EE for the Da-An Forest Park, that is: (a) the natural environment; (b) the built environment; (c) the socio-cultural environment and (d) the economic activities. Following are possible topics of the four aspects.
(a) the natural environment: principles and practice of the urban forestry, the impact that alien species made on the local habitat, the relation between ethnobotany and human life.
(b) the built environment: how well does it go with the natural environment? what are the architectural characteristics of the area nearby? What its interrelationships with the human life?
(c) the socio-cultural environment: social movements and the conflicts incurred from establishing the park, and problems of releasing animal (based upon religious belief) to the pond by some park users.
(d) economic activities: how human beings use and manage the land?
Finally, the potential ways suggested of conducting EE at an urban park are: (a) to combine EE with leisure activities and (b) to combine EE with outdoor education.
