    Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare the responses of oxygen consumption (VO2), heart rate (HR), 10-point ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), blood lactate (BLa) between offensive(back step)and defensive (power hold)technique during simulated Indoor Tug-of-War (TOW). Ten elite male TOW athletes (age=23.09±2.43 years, height=174.20±3.12 cm, weight=74.72±4.94 kg, sports age=3.45±1.46 years) performed one VO2max test with Bruce protocol on a treadmill and completed a single 1-minute bout of offensive technique, and defensive technique respectively in a counter-balanced order. VO2 and HR were measured during each TOW trial while BP and RPE were immediately collected at the end exercise. BLa samples were obtained from fingertips pre-exercise and at 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 10th minute post-exercise. The data were analyzed by pair t-test, one-way ANCOVA, one-way ANOVA, and the statistical significance was set at a=0.05 level. The results indicated:(1)The subjects' average VO2max was 58.80±11.78 ml/kg/min, and HRmax was 193±5.4 beats/min;(2)Back step reached 45.4% VO2max, 75.6% HRmax, while power hold at 31.4% VO2max, 67.6% HRmax;(3) The offensive VO2, HR, and RPE, BLa, systolic BP responses were significantly higher than those of defensive technique(25.67±4.67 vs. 17.96±4.31 ml/kg/min;143±14.9 vs. 131±11.5 beats/min;5.8±0.98 vs. 4.2±0.98;5.3±0.95 vs. 4.0±0.81 mmol/L ;145±13.4 vs. 131±12.3 mmHg). No significant difference was found in diastolic BP responses;(4)Peak BLa were found in 3rd minute post-exercise in both techniques.
