Liaozhai zhiyi is unquestionably one of the best classics in Chinese literature. But its literary reputation was not overwhelmingly high in the beginning and has undergone many ups and downs until the late nineteenth century. Before it was canonized, Liaozhai zhiyi remained dregs of literary works in Ji Yun’s eyes. With the effort of translating-editing, the major type of rewriting, Liaozhai zhiyi was canonized not only by Chinese but also by Westerners in the past three hundred years. This study aims at the history of rewriting Liaozhai zhiyi by three nineteenth-century sinologists - Samuel Wells Williams, Karl Friedrich August Gützlaff and Herbert Allen Giles - the rewriters, to see how Liaozhai zhiyi was canonized with Western poetics and under the ideology dominant in the target culture.
