This study aimed to investigate the parental intention to have daughters receive the human papillomavirus vaccine and the predicting factors of the intention. On the basis of the health belief model, the stratified cluster samplings were collected from 413 parents or guardians of female students from junior high schools in Keelung.
The findings of this study are as follows:
1. The subjects were women, aged about 36-45 years old and family with middle socioeconomic status in the majority. Therefore, the women in these families know more about the knowledge of cervical cancer and HPV vaccine in the subjects, and also got higher scores in “Perceived severity of daughters’ cervical cancer”. The external action cue of HPV vaccine was mainly from television and print media, and the internal action cue was if they had heard of the HPV vaccine.
2. Participants who answered these items, “The knowledge of cervical cancer and HPV vaccine”, “Perceived susceptibility of daughters’ cervical cancer”, “The actional cues of HPV vaccine”, “The intention of HPV vaccine” were influenced by the family socioeconomic status.
3. “The knowledge of cervical cancer and HPV vaccine”, “Health Belief scale”, “The actional cues of HPV vaccine” were positive correlated with “The intention of HPV vaccine”, and “Perceived barriers of HPV vaccine” was negative correlated with “The intention of HPV vaccine”.
4. The following factors:”Gender”, “Age”, “Family socioeconomic status”, “The knowledge of cervical cancer and HPV vaccine”, “Health Belief scale”, “The actional cues of HPV vaccine” explained 36.9% of the total variability quantity parents’ intention. Among these items, ” Perceived effectiveness of HPV vaccine” had more precise prediction.
This result of study expects will be able to offer education and health government while promoting HPV vaccine.
